Tasmania is an island the size of Ireland located 240 kilometres across the Bass Strait from the southern tip of the Australian mainland. Over a third of the state has been designated a World Heritage Area, a refuge for rare plants and animals. The island is a treat for history buffs with well-preserved historic villages along the coastal rim, while the mountainous interior is extremely popular among hikers.
While Australia has been a tourist hotspot for years, the additional distinction bestowed upon Tasmania by Lonely Planet is expected to boost the number of visitors to the country.
